This calculator determines the liquid volume in partially filled horizontal and vertical vessels. The volume of partially filled vessel heads is included in the calculation.
Vessel Volume Calculator Guide
Show Instructions
The calculator determines the volume occupied by a liquid in partially filled horizontal and vertical vessels.
Horizontal vessels can be specified with:
- conical heads
- elliptical heads
- flat heads
- guppy heads
- torispherical heads
- spherical heads
Vertical vessels can be specified with:
- conical bottom
- elliptical bottom
- flat bottom
- torispherical bottom
- spherical bottom
The calculation is based on the method described in "Computing Tank Volumes" Chemical Processing, November 17, 2002, written by Dan Jones. This method calculates the volume rigourously it does not use correlated estimates.
The partially filled liquid volume is determined automatically. A liquid height - volume chart is also generated for the vessel.
- Enter the vessel cylindrical length
- Enter the vessel diameter
- Enter the vessel head depth for the required vessel head
- Note that the vessel head depth is not required for torispherical heads
- Most elliptical heads are 2:1 elliptical heads with a head depth equal to 1/4 of the vessel diameter
- Enter the liquid height
- For horizontal vessels the maximum liquid height is the vessel diameter
- For vertical vessels the maximum liquid height is the depth of the bottom head plus the cylinder length
- Select the vessel orientation: horizontal or vertical
- Select the vessel head type
- Enter the knuckle radius parameter (torispherical heads only)
- ASME torispherical heads generally have a knuckle radius parameter of 0.06
- Enter the dish radius parameter (torispherical heads only)
- ASME torispherical heads generally have a dish radius parameter of 1
- Click the "Calculate" button
- The calculator will determine the liquid volume in the partially filled vessel
- The calculator will also generate a liquid height - volume chart for the vessel
